A cappella is an Italian phrase which means 'in the style of the chapel.' It was originally used to refer to music that was sung in a chapel or small worship space without accompanying instruments, as opposed to a large church where vocal music was usually accompanied by an organ. The term has since come to mean any music sung without accompaniment, whether sacred (religious) or secular (non-religious). A cappella music can be performed by a large choir, a small group, or as a solo.

Although very different from madrigal music, the idea of a small secular group of mostly male voices singing in close harmony unaccompanied, or with the accompaniment very much in the background, became quite popular in the 1950s and 60s

IQ CONSERVATORY dreams to build a family, learning and working together to create world class a cappella music.

Through a progressive series of composition projects, this course investigates the sonic organization of musical works and performances, focusing on fundamental questions of unity and variety. Aesthetic issues are considered in the pragmatic context of the instructions that composers provide to achieve a desired musical result, whether these instructions are notated in prose, as graphic images, or in symbolic notation. No formal training is required. Weekly listening, reading, and composition assignments draw on a broad range of musical styles and intellectual traditions, from various cultures and historical periods.

This introductory course provides the basic building blocks of music. Students learn about keys, intervals, triads, basic tonal theory and rhythm. The fundamentals of melody and harmony and a rudimentary study of musical notation are introduced. From here students are prepared for more advanced classes in music theory and composition. Ear training practice is often introduced at this point, including learning to recognize major and minor triads and intervals.

A continuation of the music fundamentals course, this class delves deeper into the elements of Western music, including scales, melodic principles, counterpoint, voice leading and diatonic harmony. Some schools incorporate non-Western music at this point. Cadences and phrase structure are introduced, along with 4-part writing for instruments and voice. Ear training practice is often covered in this class as well.

This course covers a more diverse array of music and more complicated concepts, such as extended chords, altered chords, binary and ternary structures and modulations. Ear training practice continues, and students learn about chromatic harmony in depth, including augmented and Neapolitan sixth chords.

Students start out by composing melodies based on a vocal model, using what they have learned about tonal harmony. As the student writes, he or she begins to add chromatic harmony and counterpoint, eventually writing for larger forms, such as large instrumental ensembles and orchestras.

Few concepts taught in music composition courses:

  • Music theory and analysis
  • Music performance
  • Ear training
  • Orchestration and arranging
  • Music history

At the time of Bartolomeo Cristofori’s invention of the piano, the most popular keyboard instruments were the harpsichord and the clavichord. Both of these instruments looked like the piano that exists today. The major difference between them and a modern day piano is the way their sound was produced. In a clavichord the strings are struck by tangents, while in a harpsichord they are plucked by quills.

We are living in perhaps the most exciting time in history to buy, own or play that eternal instrument, the piano. Whether your goal is to purchase something as small as software that can record what you play, a newly designed player piano, a digital instrument or a classic acoustic model, there have never been as many choices for the consumer.

With the basic understanding of the piano playing fundamentals, IQ CONSERVATORY helps you unlock hours of enjoyment for yourself and your listeners. Its never too late to get started. Discover how to confidently approach those 88 kets so you can start playing your favourite songs. Learn proper techniques for sitting at the piano, hand position, reading notes and rhythms along with playing chords.

Bass Guitar

Popular music bands and rock groups use the bass guitar as a member of the rhythm section, which provides the chord sequence or "progression" and sets out the "beat" for the song. Bassists often play a bass line composed by an arranger, songwriter or composer of a song-or, in the case of a cover song, the bass line from the original. Bassists are expected to improvise or prepare their own part to fit the song's chord progression and rhythmic style. The importance of the bass guitarist and the bass line varies in different styles of music. In some pop styles, in reggae, funk, or hip-hop, entire songs may center on the bass groove, and the bass line is usually prominent in the mix.

Of all of the genres, jazz and the mainstream commercial genres (rock, R&B, etc.) have the most established and comprehensive systems of instruction and training for electric bass. We are excited to enter the bass guitar market and bring you the same.

The reed organ is a rather young instrument. It was first by Alexandre Debain in 1840 in France, who patented his Harmonium in Paris on August 9, 1840. In this instrument he used a pressure winding system, with free reeds. Since that time his invention is used by many others. The Harmonium was produced by many others during the second half of the 19th century.

Since a few years there is a growing interest in the reed organ and it's music. Some countries have collectors of this unique instrument, and there are a few reed organ museums with a beautiful collection of instruments. Several CD's have been produced with performances on reed organ, or reed organ with piano. In this way the reed organ gets the attention it deserves: an instrument with it's own character and music. As you progress and shift to a more sophisticated harmonium you will realize that the instrument is very versatile and very temperamental. Harmonium is one of the most popular instruments for solo performance as well as for accompaniment or even group performances. By careful selection of metal, size and placement, craftsman can produce wonderful array of tone.

Konnakol is the Carnatic music (South Indian classical) performance art of vocal percussion. Basically, Konnakol is the drum language from South India.

The practice of konnakol has been around for years. In southern India the terms Solkattu and Konnakol are used to describe the vocalizing of rhythmic and drum syllables.

Apart from Western Classical music, most traditions are essentially aural, with music being passed on from generation to generation by ear. The use of mnemonics (the vocalisation of onomatopoeic sounds) is particularly a feature of African and Indian drumming, although also used in many other cultures, where sounds are verbalised in order to embed learning.

Whereas Western music puts more emphasis on harmony, Eastern musicians start with rhythm studies. Many Eastern musicians even spend years working with konnakol before even progressing to an actual instrument. It is one of the best ways to gain knowledge of complex ryhthms, odd time, polyrhythms, etc.

Konnakol helps the percussionist understand the minute beats by leveraging certain joins between the timing and pattern. Complex patterns involve combination of phrases and measured pauses (silence) and have “off” beats though the entire pattern adds up to the number of rhythmic cycle used.

IQ CONSERVATORY look forward for, the students to have curiosity, dedication, interest and perseverance to learn the art of Konnakol, as with learning any art form
